Classic/Antique Car Repair/Model A Starter

Question
Why does the starter gear jam into the flywheel after about 15 start ups? In order to fix it I loosen the bolts on the starter and dislodge it. It runs fine again for about another 15 start ups.  is there a way to prevent this?

Answer
This is a common problem.  The ring gear on the fly wheel and the starter pinion don't match.  Next time it happens, put the car in 3rd and rock it back and forth.  Get someone to help you.  It usually breaks apart by doing this.

The other thing you can do to try to fix it, short of putting in a new ring gear, if to shim the pinion a little closer toward the fly wheel.  Shim the inboard part of the starter flange toward the front of car.  That would rock the pinion toward the centerline of the car and get the pinion a little closer to the ring gear.  If this works, pls. let me know.  I have a friend with the same prob.
Good luck.

When you start the engine, don't let up on the starter.  Keep it engaged until the engine fires.  If you hesitate, or hit the starter twice quickly, it will cause the jam.  Just give it a firm push and hold it there.  Don't let up for a moment.  This way, you may be able to live with it.  My friend does.
