Hi Jeff,
I have a 1959 Metropolitan convertible.  When I went to check the fluid in the clutch master cylinder the threads on the cylinder where the cap screws on literally crumbled as I unscrewed the cap.  The cap will not screw tightly on the cylinder now and is not secure. Do I have to replace the master cylinder or is there some other way of fixing the cap problem?  Thanks for expert help.  John

Hello John,

YES, you MUST replace it.  Do NOT drive the car until you do, as this is an unsafe condition.

Also, brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air...so I would suggest that you seal that opening with a plastic bag and rubber band.  This will help keep moisture out of the brake lines, until you can change out the master cylinder.

You will need to bleed and adust the entire brake system after you replace the master cylinder and I strongly suggest that you have a professional do that, unless you are absolutely know what you are doing.

For what it is worth, I would think that you Might be able to find or order a repair manual for your car, either from a local parts store or Amazon, Borders, eBay etc. or maybe on eBay etc. etc.  It would be a good idea to have one, if you are going to do mechanical work yourself.  

Also for what it is worth, I would think that you might want to search for a classic/vintage car club in your area.  Many folks in clubs are very helpful people and may be able to help you find your answer...making a friend or two in that "world" would be very helpful, especially if you are going to do mechanical work yourself.  Who knows, maybe one of those folks has had the same problem and might be able to help you locate a replacement.  I do not know the best place for that.  I would recommend that you buy a new one as lives depend on brakes.
