Question
When I bought this car, the frame was already modified for a small block chevy, auto trans and newer rear end. I am restoring the wood frame, purchased new parts from Auto Wood Restoration, and getting ready to reassemble the body. My first question is, should I have each piece painted first before assembly or after I put it all together? My second problem is that I have no steering column. I am trying to restore the body as much as possible but with the increased power of 350 engine should I go with a newer column for safety and if so how do I know what will fit?

Answer
As to painting before or after assembly, that is a matter of personal choice. I like to paint all the parts before assembly when doing a hot rod or street rod and then using stainless steel nuts bolts and washers. A bit expensive but I think it looks cool. As to the steering column I would use a late column and gear box, preferably a power steering unit. I would also use an updated front end assembly with power disc brakes again for safety. That 350 CID is going to be an awful lot of power for that car. The most common column used by the street rod boys is the mid 90's GM unit. As far as fitting, it is going to require some modification.
