Question
The subject car makes a very audible noise from the power steering when it is exercised. The noise isn't 100% of the time but more often than not. The reservoir is full of oil and the noise is there if the temperature is hot or cold. Their are no leaks in the system. I would sure appreciate some help on this issue. Thanks Bud Riley

Answer
The probable cause of the noise is most likely the power steering pump or the belt. Most auto supply stores like NAPA sell mechanics stethoscopes. They are not very expensive and that is what I use to chase down noises like this. Also check the brackets for the power steering pump and make sure that they are tight and that there are no cracks in them. that can cause noise the power system as well. Some times a noisy belt can be checked by pouring water on the belt with the engine running and the power steering stressed making the noise. I do not advise the use of belt dressing but an older belt that has had the surfaces dried out and hard will make the damnedest noises.
