hey chad,you are on the right track when you say it may need a converter.if the engine has a cam that has a lot of lift and duration,then it robs engine vacume at an idle causing engine to want to shut down when placed in gear because the torque of the engine with that particular camshaft is causing the converter to start to lock up.order a higher stall converter like TCI STREET FIGHTER part#241000 its a 3000-3500 stall and you wont be disapointed but run a external trans.cooler, good luck
