If it was a joint that the students were burning, why did he send the boys out of the room to discuss it? Why did he only address the girls? A joint could have belonged to anyone...

A possibility has been brought to my attention... someone emailed me that, in England, it is a tampon that is being burned... somehow, it did not get by the censor over here, thus the muddled sense of the scene...
