Question
   As a small child I remember watching an old B&W movie and all that I can remember is that it had something to do with a company that was drilling for Oil, I think, but they hit some very hard rock and had to bring in a nuke, but this caused a crack that that eventually doubled back and a large piece of the earth broke loose anr drifted into space.

That sounds like "Crack in the World" (1965), although it was a color film (you may have seen it on a B&W TV).  Here's the Internet Movie Database page on it:
