Classic Film/War Movie

Question
I am trying to find the name of an old movie involving war (either WW1 or WWII). I'm pretty sure it was black and white - if I had to guess, I think it was probably made in the 40-50's. The main point I remember from it involved a man and woman having a relationship (perhaps an affair).  The scene I remember most is they were meeting in an apartment, and it is bombed. The woman goes to check on the man  on the staircase and believes he has been killed. She goes back to the apartment and prays to God that she will give up the relationship if He will spare the man's life. The man survives. Does this ring any bells? I don't remember any of the actors (perhaps they weren't A list?).

Answer
Hello Lynn,

That sounds like the Deborah Kerr-Van Johnson 1955 movie, "The End Of The Affair". It was re-made in 1999 with Julianne Moore and Ralph Fiennes. The original was shot in black & White, the re-make in colour.

Glad to be of help. Cheers.............Mel.
