Question
I remember watching this movie on PBS 30 or more years ago. First off, this is not "Goodbye Mr Chips". Movie is in B&W, I would say 1940's, British most likey. Movie  is set at an all boys school, and the scene that I remember most is about a retiring school teacher wondering if all his teachings amounted to anything, this teacher then turns around and all his students seats are filled with prior students each rising and telling what the teacher has taught him. I kind of remember that some of these boys may have died in the then current war

Answer
Hi Kenneth,

This is really not an answer to your question.  Because, if the film you're describing is not "Goodbye, Mr. Chips", I don't know what else it could be with an identical plot.

One thing to remember is that,  besides the 1969 MGM color Musical version, which starred
Peter O'Toole and Petula Clarke,.....there was the original ( classic and well-loved) black and white version, also released by MGM in 1939,  starring Robert Donat , Greer Garson , and
John Mills.  ( See:   http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031385/   )
