Answer
Hi Lorraine,

I think I may have the film you're looking for. Actually, ....two films were made,...both based   on an old 1920's play.
The first I  believe was British, made in 1930, and starred Leslie Howard,...called "Outward Bound".
The second, more popular movie  was made by Warner Bros. in 1944, and is called "Between Two Worlds".  It starred John Garfield, Eleanor Parker, Paul Henried, Sydney Greenstreet,...and as "The Steward", Edmund Gwenn.
