Question
My 92 year-old father-in-law was telling me about an old time movie he was trying to find the title to. He believed that it starred an actor by the name of Emil Jennings. The story line was about a family and a father/son relationship. The father goes to the corner store and suffers from amnesia for some reason and is hospitalized. They are not reacquainted until years later he sees his son, now a famous violinist playing on stage.

Answer
Thank you for asking this interesting question.
Here is a link to the Internet Movie Data Base and the complete list of Emil Janning's film work.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0417837/

Copy and paste this into your Internet browser. This will take you to the data base for Jannings. Click on any of his titles. In most cases, there will be a synopsis of the film. There is a great chance that you can find the one that matches the story that your father-in-law remembers. Best of luck to you in your hunt! Jannings was one great actor, and all of his performances are well worth seeing again. Sincerely, David Menefee
