Classic Film/Miracle on 34th Street

QuestionHi! Thanks for taking the time to answer this question also. In the scene where the prosecuting attorney's little boy is subpoenaed to testify regarding Santa Claus. When the boy gets down from the witness stand he goes over to Kris Kringle, saying to him not to forget to give him his official football helmet. At the end of the courtroom scene the prosecuting attorney, (it is now getting late in the day on Christmas Eve), looks at the camera, saying something like, "It's getting late I have to get that football helmet." And the movie goes on. Now I remember a scene where it shows the attorney at his home on Christmas morning and his son opens or sees the football helmet and the dad says to his wife, "I didn't get a chance to buy it. The stores were all closed." She replies, "Well how did it get here?"
Was this in the original? I can't locate this version either. I don't think my memory is that faulty.
Thanks again, Jackie
AnswerHi Jackie,
This is one of my favorite movies but i am actually not familiar with that scene. In the original with edmund gwenn and Maureen O hara ,the attorney does say he has to get the football helmet once the court case is over but thats the last we see of him. The closing scene has fred gailey seeing the cane that Santa carried next to the fireplace of the house the little girl wanted them to buy and in shock starts to realize that edmund gwynn is Santa, the last line is him saying " maybe i didn't do such a great thing afterall". There have been some remakes, one in 1974 and 1994, the 94 does have some differences but i don't recall that scene either. possibly the 74 version cause i have only seen it once. Sorry i couldn't be any further help but thats the best i can recall.
