My memory says Fall of 1950 (I am 79).  Young couple (H&W?)on beach location (Calif? Mexico?).  Man is trapped at waterline by fallen timber, will drown as tide comes in.  Night falls as woman struggles in vain to free him.  She asks for help from a stranger met earlier.  He seems dangerous (escaped criminal?), there is a covert sexual attraction.  Stranger frees trapped man and disappears.  My first thought was of Barbara Stanwyck, but I don't find it in her filmography.

I am sorry I do not know the movie you are looking for at the moment... I am going to keep looking, though, because, for some reason, I seem to remember the plot you describe. I just cannot put a title to it yet... don't give up on me yet!
