Old Yeller was fending off a rabid wolf when he got bitten. Travis tried to pen him up in the corn crib to prove he wasn't rabid, but, as we all know, Old Yeller "turned mean" and Travis had to put him down... one of the more horrifying moments in children's film history, if you ask me...

So, not to be a smart-ass, but Old Yeller's specific cause of death was "euthanasia by shotgun, direct result of being infected with rabies"...
