Question
In "To Sir With Love", When Thackeray enters the room, the students are milling around--and he completely scolds them, sending the boys out, and calling the girls "sluts"--what is burning in the stove that they have to clear out the stench? Thackeray refers to it as "that disgusting thing." I'm using the film with a class in Japan, and they are all asking what it is.

Answer
Sorry, but I don't remember that line from the film. I know that he felt it was important for girls to act like "proper young ladies," and not to encourage the boys to think of them as sex objects, but I'm not sure if that's exactly what was meant. May I suggest that you post your question on the Classic Movies Forum, where a large number of people can help answer it?
