I'm trying to find the name of a film that I watched as a kid in England, where there was a scene with a little deaf girl smashing a cup in frustration at the attempts to get her to speak, and the woman/teacher? with her gets her to break more cups to get her to make more noises.

Would you happen to know this movie?

There are two films that come to mind that contained a scene like that. One was in 1952 and the other in 1962. But, as you give no indication of exactly when you were "a kid in England", it's difficult for me to know which one to suggest.

Anyway, the two films were "Mandy" in 1952 (re-titled in the USA to "Crash Of Silence") and "The Miracle Worker" in 1962.
