Question
I am trying to find an old Black and white film. I believe it is Japanese.A drifter comes to a village and sees a woman sweeping away sand that blew in. He compares the act to the futility of life.

Answer
Hello Jay,

It sounds like Akira Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" (1961). It was based on the 1927 Dashiell Hammett gangster novel "The Red Harvest. Kurosawa's film later formed the basis for "A Fistful Of Dollars" (1964) and "Last Man Standing" (1996).

Here's part of an interesting article that examines the similarities between these films.....
