Question
I enjoy playing jazz, and I can't imagine doing something other than going into the music industry. I want to know what kind of jobs out there for jazz musicians because obviously the jazz generation has passed. What do you suggest I do to be able to live under a roof and eat food?

Answer
John,
This is a good question.  You say the jazz generation has "passed."  I disagree.  It's true that the music is not the top of the pop charts, but it is still very much embraced and being discovered by younger audiences every day.  There are a few factors that will affect your ability to make a living in the field of jazz:  your location, your diversity and your talent.  Location is obvious.  If you are in an area that doesn't have many opportunities to play jazz then you can forget making enough money to get by on playing alone.  By diversity I mean your ability to play other styles.   I love jazz, but I often get called upon to play for other types of groups.  One thing that has paid my bills is playing for musical theater productions.  This requires you being able to read music.  Pay is not always great, but it IS money.  You can also do arranging and teach private lessons to help make ends meet.  The biggest thing you will need to remember is that it will take time, patience and consistency to get it rolling, but it CAN be done.  I hope this helps.

Guy
