Question
Skeet,
I heard this song on a satellite classic rock station while I was in  a store and they were playing songs from the 60's and 70's. I don't believe the name of the song was "without you" but could be. That phrase seemed to be part of the chorus or bridge. It definetly was a hard rock song and not a soft rock one. Its not Harry Nillson. The song had some good guitar hooks almost like Blind Faith but a little heavier. It's also slightly possible ( but my broyher says no} That it could also be "was it you". The song had that typical 60's/70's lead guitar sound.
Hope you can help as its driving me nuts...
Thanks a lot

Answer

If the song is really hard driving ass kicking, and has really nice lead and backround vocals,  I am certain you mean Without You by the Doobie Brothers.
I think that song is on a CD called "The Captain and Me"
If  you like that song,  I strongly suggest getting the CD The Captain and Me. The entire CD is as good as that song.
Before the Doobie Brothers turned into a rather mediocre jazz band they was a 4  piece rock band.  Tom Johnston was the principal songwriter and front man.  His vocals are on their best songs.
That CD is probably some of his best work.

I can answer general questions about rock era bands, record labels they were on, and names of songs. Often I can tell the name of the record company that released a song, as well as the name of the song, and the year of release based on some of the lyrics. I grew up during the rock era and I am a musician myself, and always read the album and 45 info for production credits as well as lineups. One of the chat rooms I go to is quite amused at my ability to name a song along with it`s year of release and record label. I was also a record collector for years.
