Question
Skeeter, Can you tell me who sang the song "Without You"?  Some of the words are:
Can't live, if living is without you
Can't give, can't give any more...
I think the title is "Without You" and I think it was in teh 60's or early 70's.
It's buggin" me, can you help?
Thanks, in advance,
Barbara

Answer
That song is on one of my alltime favorite albums called "Nilsson Schmilsson"  by Harry Nilsson.
I cannot recommend that CD enough, it has some of the coolest songs as well as some of the most beautiful singing I have ever heard.
There is a song on it called "The Moonbeam Song"  which I like every bit as much as "Without You"  but it was not a hit.   The album had two other hits on it "Coconut" and "Jump Into The Fire".
Harry Nilsson had a vocal range of 5 octaves.
I bought that album when it first came out in late 1971 or early 1972.  It was on RCA records,  and you should be able to find a copy on Ebay if not in a CD store.

That album has some of the best known studio musicians as well as quite  a few rock era musicians on it, including (if I remember right) Ringo Star and Peter Frampton.

The song was actually written by one or two of the members of Badfinger, and was originally on one of their albums,  but Harry Nilsson is the guy that made it a hit.

I can answer general questions about rock era bands, record labels they were on, and names of songs. Often I can tell the name of the record company that released a song, as well as the name of the song, and the year of release based on some of the lyrics. I grew up during the rock era and I am a musician myself, and always read the album and 45 info for production credits as well as lineups. One of the chat rooms I go to is quite amused at my ability to name a song along with it`s year of release and record label. I was also a record collector for years.
