some people thought that the original artist was bob dylan but we all know he got it from woody guthrie off of his asch recordings as rising sun blues, but he didn't write it either i guess as far as i'm concerned. but i think that bob dylan took the credit for writing the song and singing it on his first album, "Bob Dylan". i know that eric burton and the animals got it from bob dylan because there was this documentary on rock and roll and they were interviewing some of the members of the animals and they said that they "were influenced by bob dylan especially the house of the rising sun"

i hope this info was useful

When my friend's uncle passed away several years ago, we renewed our friendship. I had forgotten that she said when we were in High School many years ago, that her Uncle wrote The House of the Rising Sun. When he passed away she mentioned it again. From what she said, Her uncle was suppose to have written that song while on a Naval Ship then one of fellow shipmates wanted to buy the song from him.He sold it to his friend for $35 as he didn't know anyone who might help him publish it. Anyway, that's what I was told. Don't remember the Uncle's name, though.
