Classic Rock/song lyrics

Question
Hi Geoff, my  queston has to do with a song I remember as a youth. It was a song that was played a lot on top 40 radio during the early to mid 70's. The song started out with a tune that sounded like your typical circus theme. Then the singer was talking about "being tired of living in a masquarade" or something like that. A couple people thought it might have been Leon Russsels tightrope or a George Benson song but the lyrics did not check out. The song had a circus beat throughout. One of my friends thought it might have been Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Any thoughts? Thanks, John

Answer
The only song I know from that era with the word "masquerade" in it was "This Masquarade" sung by The Carpenters.  This version is my personal favourite.  the song was also done by Leon Russel and also by George Benson (I do not recall EL&P making a cover of it).

The Carpenters version has a lilty feel to it - with a lot of what sounds like pan flute (circus music).

Let me know if this is what you are looking for .....

Having grown up during the 70`s, I have a great appreciation for what I consider to be the best music ever recorded. My favourite group from that era is The Eagles and I believe that the summer of 1976 was the best summer for music releases! Ask me anything about any top 40 group from the mid 70`s to the mid 80`s and I am to say with most certainty, that I will be able to provide you with an answer!
