Classic Rock/I've been living under a rock
Expert: Skeeter - 7/9/2007
QuestionHello. Since childhood, I have been passionate about music. There is little else in the world I find as beautifully enrapturing. However, due to the ways I was raised, and beliefs held through most of my life, I have withheld from listening to certain types of music. My family also was not terribly musical, and I’ve had few friends. I’m also very low on funds, which has contributed greatly. In short, I have quite a scanty music collection.
I was wondering if you could recommend albums that I could buy to begin to “build” my classic rock music library, or point me to resources where I could find such information. I really know so little about artists. To give you an idea of what I like, I love music that is minor key, and music that tends to be unique, creative, and technical.
As for classic rock, I do own The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Rubber Soul, and the “One” release of no. 1 singles. I also have Queen’s A Night at the Opera, News of the World, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, Aerosmith’s first album, and a “the best of” or “greatest hits” albums of The Moody Blues, Simon and Garfunkel, Aerosmith, Queen, The Beach Boys, and The Kinks’ One for the Road.
For a long time I have planned on buying all of Queen’s and The Beatles albums. However, because I am trying to hear more music, and I am short on money, sometimes when I already know I really like an artist, I will buy a couple of their albums first (when it can be afforded) and then look for other artists, intending to go back once I have more of a collection started. Though I have been unable to purchase music for quite some time, I need to begin collecting ideas. What are your suggestions?
I appreciate anything you have to share with me.
Answer I can suggest a lot of albums.
The band I would suggest at the top of the list would be the Moody Blues, the following albums by them:
A Question Of Balance
On The Threshold Of a Dream
To Our Childrens Childrens Children
In Search Of The Lost Chord
Seventh Sogourn.
Every Good Boy Does Favouf
Those are six of what is called the "Classic Seven" Moodby BLues albums.
For the Beatles, I suggest Abbey Road.
If you like blues oriented music I suggest Creedence Clearwater REvival , their first self titled album that has "Suzy Q" on it, and Bayou Country.
If you like more country oriented music I would suggest Willy and the Poorboys and Green River by Creedence as well.
If you like blues guitarists, the best blues guitar album ever made is Ten Years After Recorded Live. It was originally a 2 album set but is on one CD.
I can suggest MANY other albums. I would also be happy to send you some of my own music if you wish to contact me.
I write and record rock era style music with Christian oriented lyrics ( It is NOT "Christian rock").
I suggest you get a Turntable and go to junk store and buy albums, you can get them for as cheap as 25 cents.
Also, go to your library. I borrow a LOT of CDs from the library of stuff I have not heard to see if I like it.
Also carry a list with you and go to garage sales and junk stores, you can find a LOT of rock era CDs and tapes in both places cheap. I recently found a copy of Ina-Gada-Davida by Vanilla Fudge for 25 cents at a yard sale.
If you want to contact me at my email address, we can trade some emails so I can get an idea of what you like, that way I can steer you toward different things. I can suggest hundreds of albums to you.
Please send me an email if you wish, and put SKEETER in the subject line. I get hundreds of spams and delete anything that I do not recognize, SKEETER is my artist name and I immediately know it is a valid email if it is in the subject line.

I very much enjoy turning others on to rock era artists. And I have extensive knowlege of what to look for.
