Classical Music/Haydn Symphony 97

Question
Hi,
I am working on an analysis of Haydn's Symphony 97. I need the recording and score  and I don't want to buy it because I am not a conductor. I've looked everywhere on the internet. Can you find the recording or score. Could you post a link. If there are more than one recordings, could you list the one by Karajan or Bernstein. I prefer those. If not, any is fine.  Thanks for your help.

Answer
You might try miniature scores published by Norton.  Don't know if that one is in the catalog.  Check in the music library.

Another option is to do an interlibrary loan.  Ask the research librarian to find which library has one to lend.  You might have to pay for this service.  (I am assuming you are a college student.  Go to the main library or the music library.)

Or get a film copy (this is what I did for my 12th c medieval opera mss) or a microfiche.  You will have to pay for these.

You might be able to borrow a score.  Ask a conducting teacher or a string/brass teacher.  An orchestration teacher also might have it.  Or a composition teacher.

As to recordings, go to Amazon and search on that symphony.  You will find all those in print today.  Listen to the samples of each movement.

Also google (now it's a lower-case verb!) to find out-of-print discs.  These are likely to be 33s.  YOu might be able to get these on interlibrary loan, too.

Plan to listen to each movement numerous times and make a "map" of the themes and their recurrence and variants if you need to find the forms and cannot find the scores.

Best wishes.  I know you will find this process fascinating!  mb

>>*****IMPORTANT NOTE*****<<: I do not answer questions marked "private." I don't want to type the same thing to someone else later if I typed it to you already! If you mark your request "private," I will send it back to you requesting you to remove the "private" flag. Thanks for your understanding. Remember, I'm a volunteer.

My answers are not toss-offs. If I don't know the answer, I will do my best to find it.

I have many requests to identify a piece of music. If I can't identify it, I will tell you (1) what composer I think it is; (2) what composer or composers I think it is not; (3) what style period, genre, etc. I think it is or is not. And give you any other help I can to help you find the answer.

Please find a clear clip. In the interest of good computer hygiene, I will not download a clip. Nor will I go to a site where I must "register" in order to hear the clip. Please mount the clip on a public site for which you can give me a direct URL. Thanks for your understanding in this. Remember, I'm a volunteer!

Students, I do NOT do homework questions. The purpose of answering questions on assignments is not only to learn the information, but to LEARN HOW TO FIND IT. Re-read chapter. Look in the index. Look in the references given at the end of the chapter or elsewhere in the book. You also probably can find the answer using Google. Don't be lazy. I wouldn't be doing you any favors by doing your homework for you! I already know the answer. You don't. You need to find it. MORE IMPORTANTLY, you need to learn HOW to find it. That's the whole purpose of education, after all!
