Question
QUESTION: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqxENMKaeCU

Dear Marbeth,
thank you for volunteering to help the uninitiated.
I enclose here above a link to a movie which was released a
week or so ago and is freely available at youtube. There is a
piece of music starting on about 1:17 and lasts for about
four minutes. It is partly masked by speech and I apologize
for the inconvenience.
I thought it is similar in structure to Salve Regina so I
tried Vivaldi, Pergolesi, - and no. the Scarlatti Salve
Regina is somewhat close but still not it.
would you be so kind as to try it?
thanks!

ANSWER: You are quite a sleuth!  I was going to say Pergolesi, but you've already been there!  Did you try the Vivaldi "Magnificat"?  You'd better submit this to another Expert.  I can't do any more for you than you've done for yourself!!  I'm so sorry! mb

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Dear Marbeth,

this is not a follow up question but simply the only way I
found to thank you as you do not accept ratings. so here are
my many thanks.
I did submit the question to another expert and although he
did not recognize the piece,he found at the end credits that
it is indeed a Vivaldi work, like you had suggested (I knew
it is not the Magnificat because  not only I am familiar
with it, but I consider the Qui Sedes segment to be one of
the most beautiful music pieces).
so just for your information this is part of the Vivaldi
"Nisi Dominus" sung by Sandrine Piau (never heard of her,
but she is very good).
Again I wish to thank you for trying to help, for being very
very close, and for responding quickly.

Eli

Answer
Thank you, Eli.  You are very kind to write, and I am delighted another Expert was able to help you.  (You probably also are a fan of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater.")  Long ago I removed the rating from my answers.  I was tired of reading ungrateful ratings of answers I spent 2 hours on just because I couldn't name the exact piece the writer wanted identified!  Again, my thanks for your kind words and the tremendous effort you went to to get in touch again.  Have your honey give you a hug from me!  mb

Expertise

I have a PhD in musicology, with expertise in medieval - Renaissance - Baroque - Classical periods, but I'll try to help you with any period.

>>*****IMPORTANT NOTE*****<<: I do not answer questions marked "private." I don't want to type the same thing to someone else later if I typed it to you already! If you mark your request "private," I will send it back to you requesting you to remove the "private" flag. Thanks for your understanding. Remember, I'm a volunteer.

My answers are not toss-offs. If I don't know the answer, I will do my best to find it.

I have many requests to identify a piece of music. If I can't identify it, I will tell you (1) what composer I think it is; (2) what composer or composers I think it is not; (3) what style period, genre, etc. I think it is or is not. And give you any other help I can to help you find the answer.

Please find a clear clip. In the interest of good computer hygiene, I will not download a clip. Nor will I go to a site where I must "register" in order to hear the clip. Please mount the clip on a public site for which you can give me a direct URL. Thanks for your understanding in this. Remember, I'm a volunteer!

Students, I do NOT do homework questions. The purpose of answering questions on assignments is not only to learn the information, but to LEARN HOW TO FIND IT. Re-read chapter. Look in the index. Look in the references given at the end of the chapter or elsewhere in the book. You also probably can find the answer using Google. Don't be lazy. I wouldn't be doing you any favors by doing your homework for you! I already know the answer. You don't. You need to find it. MORE IMPORTANTLY, you need to learn HOW to find it. That's the whole purpose of education, after all!
