I have a bit of a conundrum. I’m an author and in my latest novel one of my main characters is a violinist. So I had a retired violinist review the manuscript (MS) to make sure I got it all right. She told me in no uncertain terms that I’d referred to music wrongly, i.e. you don’t say, for example, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 1. You would say, the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 1. I was grateful for that as I’ve been showing the possessive with the apostrophe right throughout the MS and corrected those references accordingly.

However, I received a newsletter today from Australia’s ABC Classic FM and noticed that they refer to pieces using the possessive apostrophe. I’ve underlined and made bold the relevant instances in the attached document.

So, I got onto a student guide at the University of Queensland and found reference to Musorgsky’s Sunless. How can that be?
Now I don’t know what to do! I wonder if that’s the violinist’s opinion rather than fact and/or that written and spoken reference to musical works has modernised to the point where you can use the possessive apostrophe.

Can you guide me as to the correct way to refer to a composer’s work?

Hope it becomes a great success.
I think this might have partly been the violinist's opinion.
On.CD.covers and in academic research papers, there might be a.preference to leaving out the apostrophe.
But I have seen both.
Being a published author myself (my latest book is a short story collection named Aphrodite's Curse, available on Amazon) and a professional musician all my life, I have used the apostrophe as in Mozart's Piano Concerto No.1.
So I think you are free to do so as well.
Please tell me when and.where it will be published.
I would love to read it.
