Hello! I was a music major in college many years ago. One of the groups I remembered fondly was the "old music" group called "Collegium Musicum." I've since learned that several colleges have similar groups called "Collegium." Can you please tell me the origin of that name and what it means? Thank you! John
College means, among other things, a group of people who are engaged in the same activity or share an admiration for a certain thing, such as the College of Cardinals. Used beginning about 1300, at first meaning guilds or educational institutions (obviously). Musicum translates as "musical."
So you have a body of musicians. General c.m. means early music, as you have noted; usually thru the Baroque period. Join one and have a lot of fun! mb

Students, I do NOT do homework questions. The purpose of answering questions on assignments is not only to learn the information, but to LEARN HOW TO FIND IT. Re-read chapter. Look in the index. Look in the references given at the end of the chapter or elsewhere in the book. You also probably can find the answer using Google. Don't be lazy. I wouldn't be doing you any favors by doing your homework for you! I already know the answer. You don't. You need to find it. MORE IMPORTANTLY, you need to learn HOW to find it. That's the whole purpose of education, after all!
