About Kylene Kiang Expertise Composers, instruments, trivia, etc...but please, no music theory...it makes me want to vomit. Really.
I have played the cello for 10 years.
Question Hello,
I'm a solo clarinet-player in a symphonic wind band, and we're currently rehearsing Strauss's "Zigeunerbaron"-overture. The score calls for several percussion instruments, including a side drum. Its part consists mainly of quavers (no drums-rolls, or any short notes), but halfway through it says: "Sporen *", in the same typeface that is used throughout the score to signify a change of instrument.
"Sporen" in unknown to me as a musical term, though its english equivalent "spurs" seems to mean something like the supporting legs of a bassdrum! Searches on the web have yielded nothing so far, so I wonder if you could help me to figure out what instrument, technique, or even what type of drumstick is called for.
I'd be grateful for any suggestions you may have.
Thanks,
Remmert Borst (The Netherlands)
Answer Hi Remmert,
I looked up a score of Ziegeunerbaron and it has "sporen" listed as a separate percussion instrument along with cymbals, etc. You are right, spurs are the legs of a bass drum. But as for what to do with them...I'm not really sure.
I think your best bet would be to find a recording of this and listen for the sporen part.
Sorry, I could not give you a better answer! I think I might go to the library to get this recording. It sounds very intruiging.
