Classical Music/Poet - Warnung
Expert: David Froom - 7/3/2006
QuestionHello Mr. Froom,
I'm singing a song by Max Reger entitled Warnung. The text begins "Männer suchen stets zu naschen...". It's attributed as a Volkslied.
However Mozart wrote a piece with the same text, and attributed it to a poet by the name of Gorter.
Any ideas who this could be? There is a poet by the name of Herman Gorter, but he lived too late to be the guy I'm looking for.
Thanks!
Jennifer
AnswerHi,
I took a look on the web, and everywhere I see the text's author for the Mozart listed either as anonymous or unknown.
Maybe your edition with Gorter listed as the author is in error?
You might check at a good music library in a Mozart Urtext edition. I'm guessing that "anonymous," "unknown," or "folksong" (Volkslied) is probably accurate.
