Classical Music/Rookie

Question
Now that I have a great sound system, I'm learning that I like orchestra music.  (I've been pretty much a rocker) While perhaps not "classical", I would still like suggestions.  I enjoy Holst's "The Planets", and Aaron Copland.  I like the London Symphony Christmas CD's.  Somewhat "orchestra light" I suppose.  My new system has brought out the beauty of the string instruments, and I've always loved horns.  Maybe I'm too broad here, but can you suggest some more selections?  Reminds me of my wine education>>I think I'm still on sweet whites in my music!

Thank you,

Rick

Answer
Lots of places to go!  You could try some more Copland (which ever of his ballets you've got -- Appalacian Spring, Rodeo, Billy the Kid, all are terrific -- and then maybe his 3rd Symphony.

You might also try some Tchaikovsky.  His Violin Concerto is a great place to start, then on to his symphonies.  Then I might go to Mahler.  His First and fifth Symphonies for triumph, sixth symphony for darkness.  Of course, Beethoven -- famous 5th Symphony, but also 6th for something mellow, and 3rd for something monumental.  For something older, try Handel's Fireworks Music, or his Water Music.

This is just a mere slice of what is out there.  Then when you find something you like, you try other works by the same composer, or by composers from the same time and place.

Happy listening,
