Question
I am trying to identify this song for my sister's dance teacher so she
can get a cd of it. All she has is a really bad recording. I know this
isn't much to go on but the melody is (eighth notes) E [upto] A [down to]F#[down to] D[down to] A[upto] E [down to] (quarter note) D then there are 16th notes into a modulation that is a 4th higher with the same melody. I'm sorry there's not much there

she has no idea what it was originally for, it's barouqe style

Answer
I didn't recognize it, but a colleague recognized it from some Suzuki books as the Gavotte from Mignon by Ambroise Thomas.  Check this out from some local library to be sure, or search for it at a CD store online (like Amazon, where you can hear snippets of music).  I hope this helps.
