Classical Music/the seven element of music
Expert: Donald - 3/29/2006
QuestionI am just learning about music and the different elements and I am interested in finding a piece of music that has all seven elements of music in one song. Would you be able to refer me to a particlular tune that has all seven elements?
AnswerHi Veda,
I am so excited that the elements of music hold interest for you! Every piece of music that exists contains at least one element of music (rhythm). Many contain multiple elements, as you know. One piece that exemplifies the seven elements is Symphony No. 5 by Ludwig van Beethoven. The entire symphony is constructed on a four note rhythmic motive (three shorter notes followed by a longer note.) Beethoven creatively weaves each movement with the motive, sometimes in an obvious way, and other times in a more subtle manner.
The first movement is in sonata-allegro form, the second movement is a theme and variation form, the third is a scherzo and trio, and the fourth movement is a sonata-allegro form. This symphony is interesting in that there is no break between the third and the fourth movements.
In regard to style, this piece is within the Classical period, but begins to show some of the ideas that permeated Romantic music. The dynamics are extreme at times, and the harmonies are not quite as regular as the earlier music of Mozart.
If you want a shorter example that contains all of the elements, then any of the art songs by Franz Schubert would be excellent. "The Trout" and "Erlkonig" both come to mind. "The Trout" is a strophic form (verses that repeat with different lyrics) and "Erlkonig" is through composed (no repeat scheme).
Please feel free to contact me with any further questions, and enjoy your musical studies!
