Classical Music/When to start piano lessons
Expert: Donald - 11/17/2006
QuestionDonald,
I want my son to learn to play the piano. I was wondering what a good age is to start lessons. He is only 3 1/2 years old now.
Thanks,
Ana
AnswerHi Ana,
Much of this answer will depend upon you and your child. If your child is able to sit still and concentrate for at least a 10 to 15 minute period of time, then lessons might be an option. Some teachers prefer that a child be able to read words before they begin study on the piano. I do not think that this is necessary in all cases. You are obviously a dedicated parent who cares deeply for her little one. If I were you, I would explore kindermusic and see if they have any early age keyboard modules for younger students. The Suzuki method works wonders for strings, but I do not know if such a program exists for keyboard students. Whatever you may find, at this age, singing is a basic skill that will help bridge the way to instrumental studies. Sesame Street, the Wiggles, Veggie Tales, and Dora all have great songs that little ones love to sing. This will help build a sense of pitch, rhythm, and tempo, as well as enjoyment. This last point is probably the most important now. Your son needs to enjoy music first of all, so any studies should reinforce that enjoyment. A good teacher will know this and will program lessons to bring out the fun things that music offers to begin with. If it becomes a chore, then the child will lose interest and will probably reject the instruction.
Congratulations to you for looking into this so early. Your child is most blessed to have such a caring mom.
