Question
Dear Marbeth:

This is in reference to question to you by Fabio on 9/21/2007 Subject: unknown music by Fabio. His question was "can you help me to identify this music?
you can find a half of the first movement under http://www.mediafire.com/?dkdtutgbu4z
and the full 4th movement under
http://www.mediafire.com/?9znnxywd1dn
I see many connections to Debussy, but I suspect it is not his work."

My first question to you is, did anyone ever find the name and composer of this piece?  I would love to find and purchase the sheet music.

I have a second question to you, and hopefully, it is alright to ask, as I don't actually have a clip to send.  I am trying to find sheet music to a classical piano piece that was performed in the 1949 movie, "Little Women" by the character Professor Bhaer.  It has the word "Nicht" in the title, and I actually saw the music, years ago, and played it, but cannot find the name to get my hands on the music again.  In the movie, he plays the piece and sings the lyrics in German (I believe).

I just found this site today, and hope by chance you might know the answer.

Thank you very much, Carolyn

Answer
The link sounds much like Chopin, but it is "dark" and "rich" and might be Rachmaninov or Scriabin.  I don't know what it is, nor whether anyone else addressed the question.  Sorry!

As to LW, wasn't that the Christmas Scene?  In which case, it might be "Stille Nacht" (Silent Night), but I doubt you would be asking me to identify that!!  Or was it the scene in the Professor's study?  Can't remember!  I see that LW is for sale on Amazon, but you might be able to rent it.  Might have music credits on the box that would identify the piece.  Another option is to search for the movie details.  Whatever the studio was might have a site where they archive their movies, giving cast/director/etc.  Might find the info there.  You might also search on Andrew Solt/Sarah Mason/ Victor Heerman, who wrote the screenplay.  Mervyn LeRoy directed.

Hope some of those ideas will turn up the info you want!

>>*****IMPORTANT NOTE*****<<: I do not answer questions marked "private." I don't want to type the same thing to someone else later if I typed it to you already! If you mark your request "private," I will send it back to you requesting you to remove the "private" flag. Thanks for your understanding. Remember, I'm a volunteer.

My answers are not toss-offs. If I don't know the answer, I will do my best to find it.

I have many requests to identify a piece of music. If I can't identify it, I will tell you (1) what composer I think it is; (2) what composer or composers I think it is not; (3) what style period, genre, etc. I think it is or is not. And give you any other help I can to help you find the answer.

Please find a clear clip. In the interest of good computer hygiene, I will not download a clip. Nor will I go to a site where I must "register" in order to hear the clip. Please mount the clip on a public site for which you can give me a direct URL. Thanks for your understanding in this. Remember, I'm a volunteer!

Students, I do NOT do homework questions. The purpose of answering questions on assignments is not only to learn the information, but to LEARN HOW TO FIND IT. Re-read chapter. Look in the index. Look in the references given at the end of the chapter or elsewhere in the book. You also probably can find the answer using Google. Don't be lazy. I wouldn't be doing you any favors by doing your homework for you! I already know the answer. You don't. You need to find it. MORE IMPORTANTLY, you need to learn HOW to find it. That's the whole purpose of education, after all!
