Cleaning Up/Steam too hot for wool rug?

Question
I noticed in a previous answer you gave that suggested steam cleaning is not a preferred method for cleaning wool rugs.  Being a natural fiber, can the wool be harmed by, say, 200-degree steam?  Or is this actually an appropriate way to clean wool rugs?  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Steve,
Ahhh....no hot water, please!  Steam cleaning is not a good idea for Oriental carpets: wool, silk, cotton or otherwise.  Two horrible things can happen with hot water and Oriental rugs: 1) The rug pile can shrink on its foundation and become buckled and 'unflat'.  And 2) The colors of the rug can run or be removed from the rug.  You should always use cold water and a mild soap when cleaning an Oriental carpet.  Do not fully submerge the rug in water, but do use just enough water so that the rug is cleaned through the entire pile (pile means fluffy part of the rug).  Do the shampooing by hand with a clean push broom and use an extractor to remove the water.  Let the rug air-dry thoroughly.  (This takes several days.)  Don't let a carpet-cleaning service convince you to do it any other way.
Have a great New Year!
