What makes white clothes dingy after washing and how can you prevent it.

It's probably your water that is making the whites dingy. Use Tide liquid with bleach (alternative) and a scoop of Oxyclean.
If it's really bad get some "Mary Ellen's Set-In-Stain Remover" at the grocery store and put a little into the wash water-before you put the clothes in-and they will sparkle.
