Cleaning Up/oriental rugs in hot weather

Question
We have two  fine oriental rugs at our condo in Boca Raton, Florida.  We're
there 6 months of the year.  When present, we have them hung on walls. My
wife is worried about the best way of caring for them when we're gone.  Some
say  to keep the place air-conditioned in our absence, but that's a very
expensive solution in today's world of energy costs.  I suggest a spray for
moths, followed by rolling and wrapping each rug in something like tar paper
which is used for roofing.  Please help.  Thank you.  RMM

Answer
Hello there,

Thanks for your question.  Yes, it is obviously ideal to keep your rugs stored in a cool place, but with today's energy costs, that is not always an option.  I'd suggest wrapping your rugs up with moth balls or flakes and keeping them wrapped in tightly sealed plastic.  Better yet, if the rugs fit, a space bag (you know, those as-seen-on-tv plastic bags that can be sealed with a vacuum cleaner) would be perfect since they are air tight.

Whatever you do, be sure to use moth balls, flakes, or spray, and  make sure the rug is completely vacuumed (front AND BACK) before storing.  I usually suggest storing rugs for just 3 months at a time, but if you take all the proper precautions and really seal your plastic bags, 6 months should be fine.

Best of luck,
Katie
