Cleaning Up/Afghan rug and laundry detergent

Question
I have a wonderful Isfahan Afghan that unfortunately was the victim of a laundry detergent fall.  The spot is about 18" diameter.  When it fell and spilled I took a ton of towels to soak up as much as possible and even rolled it with more towels to get what we could out but inevitably there's still remains in the fibers all the way through.  It's now dried but stiff in the spill area.  Although dry it looks slightly faded, but when I've taken a washcloth and sponge to it the color is still there.  The detergent was normal, no bleaching or anything.  How do I get this out so it goes back to its original perfection? Do I run water over (through) it? Should I be concerned with the soap? Please help

Answer
Hi Brandi,

I'm sorry to hear about your rug!  Are you able to send me a digital pic of your rug?  Is the foundation of the rug wool or cotton - can you tell?

My suggestion to you is to have your rug professionally cleaned (not steam or dry cleaned, but actually washed at a rug store).  If I can find out a little more about your rug, I may be able to give you some tips on how to do it yourself.

Thanks!
