Cleaning Up - smelly shoes

Expert: Jan Hayner - 5/25/2009

Question
My husband works in the fish department of a grocery store and as a result of being exposed to fishy water his shoes have a horrible odor resembling cat urine. I have washed them several times in many detergents and have even bleached them. Nothing is even making a dent in the smell. Can you please help me?

Answer
Hi Sherra;
Well, the odor is really rotting fish. Fish start rotting as soon as it is dead---basically. It is the salt etc. that slows the process. So, when your husband has it on his shoes and probably sock, clothes etc. It is the bacteria from the fish that you smell.

There are a few things that take the odor out, some work better than others and believe it or not, it depends on the types of fish. Since he is in a fish market, it is hard to pin point which one will work the best, so I will give you the ones that work the best.

1. spray with distilled white vinegar and wash with regular dish soap (Dawn seems to work the best) and then let dry overnight.

2. mix 4 cups of water, 1/4 cup of vinegar and 4 Tablespoons of baking soda together. This will foam up, so don't let it scare you, it is a chemical reaction. Then simply use a scrub brush to clean them or throw the whole thing in the washing machine.

3. Pure lemon juice and a scrub brush will take the odor away too.

Any of these will work for you. Good luck and happy scrubbing.
