Cleaning Up - FILM BUILDUP ON GLASS

Expert: Jan Hayner - 6/13/2009

Question
We have a 100+ yr.old home. For 13 yrs now we have a FILM buildup on all glass in our house. The old (Natural gas) furnace was very old and was replaced with a new (natural gas)98% efficency one.We have always had a buildup since we had noved in. Hot water tank is also 99% efficent and new also. What causes this buildup and what can be done to stop it? We also had checked for Radon, 0%.. Thank you for any help you can offer. P.S, We get it summer or winter?

Answer
Hi Steve;
Let's see, do you live near the ocean? Then it could be a salt build up on your windows. It goes through the air from the water and collects on windows (both inside and out#.
OR #Which is my guess# you have hard water. Hard water will create and film on windows. When you wash them, they are great and as time goes buy they look like they are all fogged up.

You can take a sample in to your local DNR office and they will test it for you and let you know.
A faster way is to take some denatured alcohol, apply it to a rag and wash the window. If it remains shiny and no film, it is your water!

So, you have a few options for cleaning the film off and keeping it gone.

1. Use denatured alcohol and wash the windows as usual and wipe with white paper toweling.

2. Mix 1 cup of vinegar to a gallon of water, wash the window and then wipe with newspaper #the ink keeps the window streak free) you will need to scrub your hands, but it is worth the effort.

3. If none of those work, use 1 cup of antifreeze to a gallon of water and wash the window and wipe with a lint free white rag.

But, keep in mind that if you DO have hard water, You will have to use bottled water or invest in a water softener for your home.

Good Luck Steve, you will have clean windows in no time!
