I am a newlywed that is moving into my first house. It is an older house, built back in WW2. The house has had some renovations: new appliances, bathroom fixtures, carpet, tile, ect but i would like to know some tips as to get my house "like new" clean. (The second room has not had any renovations) We have a cat and i just want to make it a safe clean environment for him and us. Any tips for me?
Answer Hi Kelley;
Congratulations on getting married and the new/old house!
Since you have a cat (I have 3) the smartest way to go is the way grandma used to do it and clean 'green' clean. Use a mixture of 1/4 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup of vinegar and add to a gallon of water. This will fizz up, so don't get scared, it is a chemical reaction. It will fizzle out and calm down in a few seconds. But, this is great for cleaning almost anything and it even cleans the pipes when you dump it down the toilet!! Grandma sure was smart!!
This won't hurt your cat either, I use it all of the time. If you need a little abrasive for spots that are hard to clean-just add a little salt to the cloth and there is the abrasive. It won't scratch anything, but cleans like crazy.
Instead of using liquid gold on the wood work for shining it up, use plain old vegetable oil. YES, vegetable oil. It helps to clean the dirt right out of the pours and feeds oil #wood is from trees and trees have oil# back into the wood, which helps it from drying out.
Go to my website http://www.organizingandcleaning.com and look under cleaning. There is a section in there that has recipes for all homemade cleaners for a ton of different items. This will save you a ton of money and be totally safe for kitty.
Clean up the wood work and give the older rooms a fresh coat of paint, add some sheer curtains to the windows that are washed with ammonia to get them squeaky clean and you will have a brand new room!
