Cleaning Up - Persian rug

Expert: Jahann and Sons Persian Rugs - 6/29/2009

Question
My son has split coca cola on his uncles persian rug and we have a few days to sort the problem before he returns from holiday, please help.  We live in the UK so do you know of any worldwide products that could help.

Answer
Hi Claire,

I'm sorry to hear about the spill.  Coke is a difficult stain to get out, as it is a dye-based stain (like red wine, tea, coffee, etc.).  With these types of stains, I always recommend that you use cold water and mild soap (like Ivory) to flush out the stain and get all of the dye out.  As you go, use white towels to blot the area to prevent color running.

There are a few products on the market that sometimes work with dye-based stains, in particular the Resolve line of products, however, if the Persian rug has significant value, my recommendation would be to forgo using these products and take the rug to a professional Oriental rug cleaner if the soap and cold water doesn't work.  The reason I say this is because if you end up using a chemical from the store and it is unsuccessful, then the chances of a pro getting it out are pretty much zero.  Chemicals that don't end up working just end up setting the stain more.

It is a tough call, I know!  I'm sorry I couldn't give you a better answer, but the truth is, dye based stains are difficult.  If you'd like to send me a photo, I can tell you exactly what kind of rug it is.  This way, you'll be able to decide if you want to try the remove the stain on your own or just go ahead and have it professionally cleaned.

Best of luck,
Katie
