Cleaning Up - Car front windshield

Expert: Robert Lamb - 7/5/2009

Question
Hi, I hope you might have a solution to my question. Ont the front of my car windshield are 100's of tiny specks, you can actually feel if you move your hand over. I'm told it could be lime deposits from parking under trees. I've tried warm soapy water, white spirit and a slightly abrasive cloth but I can't shift them. When the sun is directly in front of me it is actually severely impairs my vision. Any ideas?

Answer
Chris,

I would use some warm soapy water and some triple fine steel wool. Make sure you use steel wool labeled "000". Steel wool is graded with zeros in the USA. One zero (0) is very abrasive and four zeros (0000) is least abrasive. You could use 0000 steel wool, but it is so fragile, it will decompose too easily. 3M also makes a white scrub pad you could use. 3M makes scrub pads graded by color. Please note, white is the least abrasive color and some grades can damage glass, but white will not damage glass.

Work under shade as direct sunlight will evaporate your soapy water and make the cleaning difficult.

There are other options, but I would try this first.

Let me know how this turns out for you.

Sincerely,

Robert Lamb
