AboutJahann and Sons Persian Rugs Expertise I can answer any and all questions you have regarding the cleaning, restoration and repair of Oriental rugs. I am more than happy to view your pictures via email and to give you advice on what you can do yourself and what needs to be left to the pros. I can also advise on the cost-effectiveness of repair on your rugs.
Experience My family has had a Persian carpet store in the Washington, DC metro area for nearly 30 years (www.jahannandsons.com).
Question I apologize this is not an Persian Rug question per say, but more one of carpet cleaning in general. So many techniques out there for carpet cleaning. Its hard to know which one is best. In this case I need a good cleaning of lighter Berber carpet.
Steam, dry, zero res ... ????
Any observations you can make would be appreciated,
Clayton Moore
Answer Hi Clayton,
You should not steam or dry clean this rug. First, you're going to want to spot clean it with a spot cleaner and lots of elbow grease. Then, you can rent a shampooer and, using cold water only, shampoo the rug. With Berber carpets, sometimes the glued backing used to assemble the rug comes up to the surface of the carpet. You'll sometimes see yellow stains soak through. In order to prevent this, flip the rug upside down when it dries (this is what has worked for us). If it is wall-to-wall, just be careful when you clean it.
I hope the information is helpful!
Best,
Katie
