Experience My family has had a Persian carpet store in the Washington, DC metro area for nearly 30 years (www.jahannandsons.com).
Question Our son, stationed in Afghanistan, has purchased and shipped several Afghan rugs. One rug has a definite "barnyard" odor. The dealer told him that this is typical of rugs from the nomadic "ku-chee(sp?)" tribes.
My question is: How do you recommend we clean, wash,or deodorize this rug?
Thank you, Steve
Answer Hi Steve,
That is too bad about the rug, but not at all uncommon. You know your rug is authentic, at least!
That barnyard odor is most likely the result of the wool not being washed properly prior to production. You can remedy this situation by having your rug professionally cleaned. Ordinarily, I would say you could give cleaning the rug a try on your own, but Afghani rugs can be a bit tricky, as they very often have a wool foundation and may buckle when washed. The rug will probably need to be cleaned and blocked to prevent it from buckling. When picking a place to clean the rug, make sure they wash the rug with soap and water and don't just dry or steam clean it, as this will not help with the smell.
Afghani rugs are made with tough wool, and are great for high traffic areas. Congrats on getting one! If you're in the Washington, DC area and need any assistance with your rugs, just let us know.
Best of luck,
Katie
