Cleaning Up - cleaning and sanitizing non-washable pillow

Expert: Jan Hayner - 8/20/2009

Question
hello-

my 3 yr old daughter insists on using her Thomas decorative bed pillow as her actual pillow every night.  It has stuffed animal-like fur fabric and feels like it is probably stuffed with tiny styrofoam beads.  It is not machine washable and can only be spot cleaned per instructions.  I am concerned about the sanitary aspect of her using it every night and was wondering if you could recommend a way to clean the entire pillow without ruining it.  Thanks so much!!

Answer
There are dry cleaning sprays on the market and all of them are about the same as far as cleaning ability.
In between and to give it a deodorized and sanitized effect, simply use baking soda and brush it clean.
Baking soda will pull dirt and grime that isn't embedded in the nap and won't hurt the beads on the inside.
The little beads, is what hampers use of a lot of other cleaning materials. Short of opening one end, emptying the beads, cleaning, refilling the beads and resewing, this is your best bet.
Good Luck and it will smell a lot better and will be clean.
