Cleaning Up/Persian rug

Question
I have a room-size Persian rug which was rolled up under an air conditioner.  The air conditioner was leaking for awhile before I realized it, causing an area of mildew under the rug and, although not visible, I'm sure in/on the carpet as well.  We have put the carpet outside in the sun, but am wondering how I should clean the area that was exposed to the mildew.  Thank you.

Answer
Hello Priscilla,

If it has been more than 5 years since the last time your rug was professionally cleaned, then you are going to want to have your rug cleaned by a pro.  Mildew is tricky, and if left to its own devices, it can eventually lead to dry rot in a carpet.  That type of damage is not usually cost effective to repair.  Call around, and see if you can find a place that specializes in Oriental rugs and actually washes the rugs (not dry or steam clean).  Spot cleaning really won't work with a rug with mildew, and if the rug is Persian and room-sized, it will be well worth the effort and expense of having it done right to prevent further damage.  A

Best of luck,
Katie
