Cleaning Up/Rolling or folding to transport a rug, which is better.
Expert: Jahann and Sons Persian Rugs - 5/27/2011
QuestionI was told that to move our rugs across country that we needed to fold them and they would be fine, but then my neighbor said that I would be better off having them cleaned and then rolled up with a cardboard tub and wrapped in paper (he said they should use heavy craft paper), and not to put anything on them but keep on top to prevent damage or "breaking the back" of the rugs. I think he is a good guy (my neighbor) but does he really know what he talking about? Ben
AnswerHi Ben,
The answer to this question depends on the rug that you have, but in general, folding will not cause any problems for your rugs. Worst case scenario is that you would have to use a damp brush to brush out the creases when you unfold them (much like you would comb your hair when you wake up in the morning).
Rugs that you would not want to fold would be old, brittle rugs, rugs that have sustained water or urine damage (they would feel stiff), and low-quality machine-made carpets. All other rugs are just fine being folded.
If you have a picture of the back of your rug, feel free to email it to me (ruglady@jahannandsons.com). I can let you know if your rugs will be okay folded.
Thanks!
