Question
QUESTION: Hello, the runner in our former house was subjected to a water break from the second floor.  I have no information about timing, etc.  but the insurance company had the rug cleaned and it was then put in the first floor of the house, which was not being lived in and seemed musty.  I called the new owner and got the runner.  It smells musty and I have put it on the outside deck to air out.  How long to do I try to air it out before I give up and find someone to actually get rid of the musty smell?  It is 23 feet by 32 inches wide and beautiful.

ANSWER: Hi Susan,

Sorry to hear about your rug.  Do you know what kind it is?  A week of airing out the rug should be the longest that it needs.  Beyond that, you may need an additional cleaning.  If the rug has a fabric backing, it could be the breakdown of the latex glue of the rug that is causing the smell.

Best of luck,
Katie

QUESTION: Dear Katie, thanks for the advice.  I am attaching a photo of the rug, perhaps that will tell you what kind it is.

Answer
From your photo, it appears that your rug is a 1940s or 1950s hand-knotted, Sarouk Persian rug.  It would be well worth the expense to have it re-cleaned if the smell doesn't go away. It is a lovely rug, and these types are great for heavy traffic.  I hope it all goes well, and if you're in the DC-metro area and need assistance with it, we'd be happy to help.
