WHAT IS THE BEST THING FOR HIGH TRAFFIC AREA ON THE CARPET?  THE CARPET IS ABOUT 4 YEARS OLD.

4 years w/o having it cleaned? Depending upon how dirty it is a pro may not even be able to get it back to clean. I recommend  at a minimum of once a year (professionally cleaned). More often for homes with kids or pets or very light colored carpet. You can use a home style cleaner or rental unit but that should only be to supplement (in between) not replace.
